Hey everyone,
I'm really looking forward to our next get together on Thursday 12th June. It will be great to play some more games develop more characters and get them creative muscles flexin'.
I'm doing some research at the moment regarding the use of improv in therapy which I'd like to share:
I have found out that improv games are being used by therapists and carers to help in the treatment of people who have Alzheimer's or dementia. There are also research studies looking at how improv games lifts mood and helps with anxiety; builds friendships and strong social bonds, and helps us try things out that perhaps might be a little scary.
I have used improv games in my own teaching practice, helping my students to encounter challenging situations, or try out life events in a safe and supportive environment. I observed some amazing transformations in the students that I worked with at Alderwasley Hall School.
I worked as a drama teacher with a small group of students, one of whom came to the school suffering from chronic crippling anxiety; who would hide under tables should an unfamiliar person walk into the room. Through improv games, we worked on creativity, team building skills, social skills and interview techniques so that eventually they auditioned for Performing Arts college and eventually sang at the college Christmas Pantomime!
Being in a safe, supportive environment, surrounded by creative people who all want the best for us, can really change our lives.
I'm so grateful to all of you who have taken the time to come along and support each other; to trust me, and begin the process of starting something special.
Thank you
See you on the 12th.
